Issues Associated with Snoring and Possible Remedies for This Condition

There are many different sleep-related disorders which afflict a great deal of individuals these days. One such condition is that of snoring. Not only is it bothersome for those around the snoring individual but it can also lead to serious medical conditions as a result thereof. The following will highlight issues associated with the condition of snoring and list possible remedies for those who snore and wish to stop.

What Causes Snoring?

There are a few different potential causes of snoring. One cited cause of snoring is allergies which affect the individual. When a person’s nose is stuffy they are more likely to snore while they sleep. The inability to inhale and exhale through the nose properly causes the snoring sound to be emitted. As the individual’s allergies worsen throughout the season, the more problematic the snoring issue may become.

Another reason why individuals may snore can be due to a cold or sinus infection which blocks the nasal passages and makes breathing more difficult than it is for those who do not have colds. Depending on the regular size of the nasal passages, some with colds may experience greater episodes of snoring than others when they have colds and sinus infections.

For those who snore on a more regular basis and do not have a cold or allergies, this may be due to a deviated septum. This medical condition consists of crooked tissue and cartilage within the nostrils. The crooked feature of this area prevents the even flow of air to go through the nostrils thereby causing the individual to snore.

Another medical condition which can lead to snoring in an individual is in the case of enlarged tonsils or adenoids. If these portions of the body are enlarged, again the air has a hard time getting through various portions of the head and causes snoring sounds to be emitted.

An additional cause of snoring is one which can be prevented by the individual and that is drinking alcohol. The alcohol causes various portions of the mouth and throat to become relaxed which will block the necessary air movement through this region. The more alcohol one drinks the more likely they are to experience snoring.

Lastly, snoring can be caused by the condition of being overweight. Those who are overweight have a harder time breathing normally and the result is that snoring will occur while they sleep. In addition to being unhealthy for the individual as a whole, being overweight can cause them to snore and ultimately experience concomitant conditions.

Serious Conditions Which Can Result From Snoring

Although the act of snoring may not be harmful in and of itself there are serious conditions which can be related to the act of snoring. One of these conditions which causes concern for snorers and their family members is the medical condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when one experiences irregular breathing while they are in a state of sleep. The exact seriousness of sleep apnea will vary from individual to individual but all of those who have sleep apnea will actually stop breathing for a period of time while they are asleep. The relationship between snoring and sleep apnea is a well-known one and is often studied by those in the medical profession. Individuals who have sleep apnea may need medical attention as this can cause accidents and injuries due to the tiredness of the individual as well as cause concern due to their irregular breathing at night.

Potential Remedies for the Condition of Snoring

There are quite a few potential remedies to cure snoring in individuals. The remedies chosen should be based on possible causes of the snoring. With regard to those who snore as a result of their allergies, they can take various types of allergy medications in order to alleviate their symptoms and make snoring less likely. For those who have colds and experience snoring on a temporary basis, taking cold medication, consuming vitamins and eating healthy can keep them from getting sick and thereby reduce their frequency of snoring episodes.

If one believes their snoring is caused by a deviated septum they may consider having a medical procedure performed in order to correct the deviation. If the doctor cites enlarged tonsils or adenoids as the cause of snoring, then medical procedures may be advisable in order to correct these medical conditions. If either of these two issues seem to be the cause of the snoring it is extremely important to consult with a medical health professional to see what can be done to correct the problem if anything as such conditions can lead to further health problems for some.

In the case of alcohol intake and/or the overweight characteristics of the snoring individual, they can rest easy in knowing that these problems can be corrected as well. Those who drink alcohol and snore as a result of the beverages should limit their alcohol intake or cut it out of their diet altogether. As for those individuals who may be overweight, getting fit and healthy will not only benefit them in the way of their snoring issues but will also help them to feel better overall.

It is also important to note that there are various medications and remedies on the general consumer market these days which are said to help individuals stop snoring. Although some may sound extremely tempting, it is important to thoroughly review the product information prior to taking anything. You should know exactly what you are putting into your body at all times, especially if it is simply to prevent you from snoring. On the other hand, products such as Breathe Right strips which you place over the bridge of your nose may be a good product to consider as you do not have to consume it and such a product may do the trick to separate your nasal passages and make breathing much easier
